In the Indian context the most successful mentoring relationship is the one between Krishna and Arjuna.

  • Constant support without interference-building self confidence
    • Never fight for Arjun and Pandeva’s
    • Advisor to Arjun and Pandeva’s ,
    • Did not command or took decisions on there behalf.
    • Saw to it that Arjuna did not unduly depend upon him’
    • Krishna was friend cum counselor to Arjuna 
  • Mentor and Mentee should have relationship which is full of openness and Warmth
    • Arjuna was very open and vocal with Krishna regarding the dilemma he is facing and why he did not want to fight the War.
    • Krishna also very much understood his dilemma and than advice him with all his warmth and affection .
    • The communication between Arjuna and Krishna never looks like one way communication, It is two way communication between Mentor and Mentee.

    • Krishna provided his feedback to Arjuna without being judgemental , He focused on the issue or challenges the Arjuna is facing and advice him accordingly.
  • Provide unconditional support in difficult time
    • Standing with Mentee and giving him unconditional support.
    • Great trust between them.
  • He did not resort to a simplistic command tactic, but made the effort to resolve Arjuna’s moral distress to the best of his ability

Mentor Role

  • Mentors should be the support system of their mentees.
  • Mentors must learn how to celebrate their mentees’ success, no matter how big or small.
  • Mentors should support their mentees when their mentees eventually face challenges and setbacks.
  • Mentor should not “sugar-coat” and guide them how to better avoid undesirable surprises and pitfalls.

Mentee Role

  • How to identify the skills, knowledge, as well as their own goals.
  • Open-ended questions are great and must be followed by follow-up questions.
  • Proactive and regular communication. should take on the initiative to work with their mentor.
  • Trust the process.
