Metrics are simply measures of quantitative assessment commonly used for assessing, comparing, and tracking performance or production.
When metrics are excessively focused on outcomes rather than processes, managers spent their valuable time collecting data, positioning the numbers and lobbying their ‘story’. Managers become overly focused on Outcomes .
Individuals or Leadership may deliberately skew data to influence the results toward a desired conclusion or Outcome
Metrices should be used to:-
- Inform, not persuade or Impress.
- Disclose uncertainties.
- Truths they can reveal.
- Inform that is not interesting but causes to change behavior
Characteristics of Good Metrices :-
- Communicate clearly
- Implications of the finding should be well understood,
- Action is needed based on the finding.
- KPI’s should reveal the truth which can be be acted on.
