Are we sharpening the right Axe

Once, a humble woodcutter lived near a dense forest. His only asset was his old iron axe—simple, worn, but sharp enough to sustain his livelihood. He used it wisely, cutting only what he needed and never more.

One morning, while chopping wood near a pond, his hand slipped and the axe flew into the deep water.

He sat on the bank, devastated. For him, the axe represented more than a tool. The woodcutter sat by the pond and cried in despair.

Seeing his honesty and sorrow, the Forest Spirit (or God) appeared and asked:

Why do you weep?”
The woodcutter explained how he lost his only means of work. The Spirit plunged into the water and came up holding a golden axe.

“Is this your axe?”

The woodcutter shook his head:

“No, that is not mine.”

The Spirit went back into the water and returned with a silver axe.

“Is this yours?”

The woodcutter again said:

“No, that is not mine either

Finally, the Spirit brought out an ordinary iron axe — old, worn, and exactly like the woodcutter’s. The woodcutter’s face brightened.

“Yes! That one is mine!”

Impressed by his honesty, the Spirit said:

“Because you spoke the truth, you may take all three axes — the gold, the silver, and your own.”

The woodcutter bowed gratefully and went home a happy man.
