Are You Inside the Wrong Window?

People and organizations don’t always choose what is best .They usually choose what feels:

  • Acceptable
  • Sensible
  • Popular

Even if better options exist, they may be ignored because they fall outside what is considered “reasonable.”

Invisible boundary

  • Inside it → ideas feel safe and acceptable
  • Outside it → ideas feel risky, unrealistic, or “not for us”

That boundary is called the Overton Window But outside the boundary is where the magic happens

Prometheus and Fire : Breaking the invisible boundary

In ancient mythology, fire symbolized knowledge, power, and progress.
Yet it was reserved exclusively for the gods, under the authority of Zeus.

For humans, access to fire was not merely difficult—it was unacceptable and unthinkable.

Then came Prometheus.

He challenged the accepted order and introduced what was previously forbidden—bringing fire to humanity.

The consequences were twofold:

  • Immediate resistance and punishment – Bringing Fire to humanity was unimaginable and Radical
  • Long-term transformation and progress – Later it became Acceptable , Sensible , Popular and new Normal

Fire, once outside the realm of possibility, became foundational to civilization – Magic happened

Shifting boundaries

  • New technologies (AI, automation) were once seen as experimental
  • Flexible work models were once considered impractical
  • Non-traditional career paths were once viewed as unstable

Over time, each of these has moved from unthinkable to mainstream.

This shift does not happen automatically—it happens because individuals and organizations gradually expand what is considered acceptable.

The Overton Window is not fixed—it keeps evolving.

The real challenge is not just to operate within what is acceptable today,
but to recognize when those boundaries are limiting future possibilities.

Progress happens when individuals and organizations begin to work at the edges of this window—Where ideas may still feel uncomfortable, but hold the potential to become tomorrow’s norm.

Progress, whether in business or society or personnel, depends on the ability to:

  • Identify shifting boundaries.
  • Evaluate emerging ideas objectively.
  • Expand the definition of what is acceptable.

So, is it time to open the window—and let new possibilities redefine what feels acceptable
